Hayman Fire - Started June 8, 2002

The Hayman Fire started about 1 mile from our cabin near the Tarryall Mountains. I was there with my son, his friends and their dad's for his birthday celebration. I saw the first burst of smoke from the cabin porch and immediately drove 1.5 miles South on Country Road 77. We arrived on the scene before the first "fire truck" arrived. Within two hours we were ordered to evacuate.

By Saturday night it was reported as a 40 acre fire. Sunday night 30,000 acres, Monday night 76,000 acres and Tuesday 85,000 acres. It remains the largest forest fire in Colorado history. The Hayman fire was named for "Hayman" site near Tappan Gulch, at the fire's origin. It remains the largest forest fire in Colorado history and is one of the mose severe with respect to burn intensity (See Baer Burn Severity below).

After the evacuation I posted the pictures we had taken on this site. The response was so large I begain tracking the fire and posting up dates. Tens of thousands of people watched the fire progress using updates on my site. Since that time I have been interviewed for several magazines, news casts and a documentary. I leave the site intact today as it is still visited by thousands of people every year.
